In this episode, Gabriella Hoffman, a freelancer, and small business owner explains the nefarious Pro Act legislation from the perspective of a person who would be materially impacted if the legislation ever passes into law.
From Gabriella's linked article,
"Why is there a concerted push to undermine companies like Uber, Lyft, and DoorDash? It’s quite clear: Public sector unions are losing relevance and can’t compete anymore. Membership is at an all-time low. Brookings Institution attributes the decline to growth of service-based jobs, deregulation, and adoption of right-to-work legislation by states, among many reasons.
According to a January 2020 Bureau of Labor and Statistics (BLS) report, only 10.3 percent of the U.S. workforce currently holds union membership. In 1983, about 20 percent of the workforce—or 17.7 million Americans— belonged to unions."

1 Thessalonians 4:11 ESV
And to aspire to live quietly, and to mind your own affairs, and to work with your hands, as we instructed you
2 Thessalonians 3:10-15 ESV
For even when we were with you, we would give you this command: If anyone is not willing to work, let him not eat. For we hear that some among you walk in idleness, not busy at work, but busybodies. Now such persons we command and encourage in the Lord Jesus Christ to do their work quietly and to earn their own living. As for you, brothers, do not grow weary in doing good. If anyone does not obey what we say in this letter, take note of that person, and have nothing to do with him, that he may be ashamed. …

- Gig Workers Are Essential: Why Freelancing Matters in the U.S. – YouTube — Gabriella @GabriellaHoffman explains why gig workers are essential and why the U.S. must preserve freelancing going forward.
As mentioned before, 59 million Americans partake in the gig economy—whether they are contract workers or independent contractors or moonlights. That 59M figure translates to 36 percent of the U.S. workforce. Total valuation last year by gig workers totaled $1.2 trillion. There’s a reason why freelancing is rising in popularity and will continue growing.
There are several forces at work undermining this sector of the economy, desiring to increase barriers to entry and to place more burdens, regulatory or not, onto participants.
We need more gig workers, not fewer.
- Employee Reclassification Laws Will Destroy Freelancing in America by Gabriella Hoffman — Ride-sharing companies Uber and Lyft could be on the brink of shutting down in California after a judge ordered them to reclassify independent contractors as employees.
Why? All companies employing freelancers or individuals partaking in freelancing must comply with Assembly Bill 5 (AB5), the new anti-gig work law.
It seems benign on the surface. Once readers peruse the bill’s language, they discover its nefarious goals.
