USMCA: ‘A Trump Win’ and ‘A Win for the American People’

By Maureen Mackey | December 10, 2019

Democrats are touting the new USMCA trade deal [1] as essentially their own creation — but that’s not the view of the White House.

“They’re going to say what they want to say,” noted Hogan Gidley, deputy press secretary, on Tuesday morning in an interview with Stuart Varney, host of “Varney & Co.,” on the Fox Business Network [2].

“And they’re going to try and shape the message, and they’re going to try and spin it.”

“But the fact is, the president worked on this deal, got it secured [late last year],” added Gidley. “This has been sitting around, languishing, waiting to move forward. It would immediately help our farmers and ranchers and our manufacturers, our automakers. It was a wonderful trade deal, something brand new that we’d never seen before.”

“And I’m glad that she [House Speaker Nancy Pelosi] finally decided to move forward and support it.”

President Donald Trump first reached [1] the historic trade agreement with Mexico and Canada last year.

The United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement (USMCA) is a modern update of the previous trade compact among the three countries, the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA).

See Trump’s Tuesday morning tweet about it here.

“There is no question, of course, that this trade agreement is much better than NAFTA,” House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) declared at a press conference on Tuesday, in announcing her Democrat group’s support of the agreement.

Major U.S. stock indexes turned positive after the announcement, Fox Business [4] noted.

But Pelosi went to say that she believes the current deal is “much better” than what the White House delivered to Congress.

Hers was a “stale” announcement behind the podium, White House press secretary Stephanie Grisham pointed out on the Fox News Channel today. She said that President Trump, by contrast, will be meeting with thousands of the American people tonight at a rally in Hershey, Pennsylvania — a key battleground state for the 2020 election.

Expected to be in Mexico City on Tuesday for a USMCA [1] signing ceremony are U.S. Trade Representative Robert Lighthizer, White House senior adviser Jared Kushner, and Canadian Deputy Prime Minister Chrystia Freeland, Fox Business reported.

Gidley also told Varney on Tuesday about the agreement and related developments, “I just saw on Twitter the AFL-CIO came out and endorsed the plan as well. So, this is going to help everybody.”

“But I think it’s interesting, Stu. When you watch the impeachment press conference, you saw people behind her who represented both coasts, California, New York. This press conference was decidedly different, with representation across the country because this trade deal was so historic, it would have impacted all Americans from sea to shining sea, not just those of the coastal elites.”

“But to you, it’s a Trump win, right?” asked Varney.

“Oh, yes, it’s a Trump win, sure,” said Gidley of USMCA. “But it’s a win for the American people. Look, this impeachment hoax, this witch hunt, it doesn’t impact negatively Donald Trump. It impacts the American people negatively because the Democrats who claim to want to work with the president on so many things, like lowering prescription drug prices and also this USMCA deal — they ignored it for months.”

“Here we are, though,” Gidley added. “Success for the American people moving into the Christmas season, the holiday season. It’s one of those big wins for this country.”

Regarding the two articles of impeachment filed against Trump [5] this morning by House Democrats, Gidley noted, “These are baseless charges. The whole thing is a hoax. They’re moving forward with a predetermined outcome. Yesterday, Nancy Pelosi — it’s so funny. They’re kind of all over the place. She said yesterday that they’ve been working on this for two-and-a-half years. Wait a minute. I thought this was about Ukraine. I thought this was about bribery. They poll-tested words to use like bribery, but yet bribery is not one of the charges.”

He added, “How many times are the media going to allow Nancy Pelosi and the Democrats to get away with lying about this president? They’re moving forward with articles of impeachment before he released the transcript. Then, when they sent us a letter and said, ‘Cooperate,’ before we responded, they said, ‘We’re going to move forward with articles of impeachment.’ They’ve voted for it many times without proof, without evidence.”

“Shouldn’t be shocking, though, for Nancy Pelosi, as you know, who famously said, ‘Let’s pass Obamacare, then we’ll find out what’s in it,'” Gidley added.

“She’s moving forward because she knows what the predetermined outcome is. She wants to impeach the president. They’ve been talking about it since before he was inaugurated, sworn into office. And now it looks like they’re moving forward with it today.”
